One of Tamil Cinema’s most popular superstars – Vijay – fondly known as Ilaya Thalapathy – turns 45 today. The hunk of an actor has wowed millions of moviegoers across the globe and has entertained them with gritty performances on screen. Interestingly, Vijay has also impressed the audiences by his singing. The superstar has given playback to as many as thirty songs in his career spanning over 35 years.

Vijay began his acting career in 1984 when he was barely ten years of age. Thus, he began his journey as an actor with a movie titled Vetri. Films such as Kudumbam, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Vasantha Raagam, Sattam Oru Vilayaattu and Ithu Engal Neethi followed in the subsequent years. The actor returned to the cinema after a hiatus of eight years in the lead role in a movie titled Naalaiya Theerpu. But Rasigan, a film that hit the silver screen in 1994 marked his arrival loudly.
Next, he went on to do films such as Vishnu, Chandralekha, Coimbatore Mappillai, Vasantha Vaasal, Minsara Kanna, Badri, Thirumalai, Pokkiri, Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Nanban, Thuppakki, Thalaivaa, Jilla, Kaththi, Mersal etc.
Vijay bagged the prestigious Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for his performance in the film Kadhalukku Mariyadhai in 1997. Later, he bagged the Special Prize for his role in Thirupaachi in 2005. His performance in Theri helped him bag the South Indian International Movie Awards in 2016. Apart from these, Ilaya Thalapathy has an ocean of fans. The success rate of his films proves that he is hugely popular among the masses.
Born as Joseph Vijay, the actor is the son of filmmaker A Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shobha. He married Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil fan of his, in 1999. They are blessed with a son named Jason Sanjay and a daughter named Divya Saasha.
