Laxmi better known as Vanaja from the series Sembaruthi is no doubt a versatile actor. In fact, this show which airs on ZEE5 has won the hearts of many viewers for its distinct narrative style and strong characters. And Vanaja, who is the main antagonist of the series has surely created a name for herself.

But today it is not just about Laxmi and her role in the Tamil series. The actress paid a tribute to the great film director, screenwriter and actor J. Mahendran on her Instagram page who passed away yesterday after being critically ill.
Born in 1939, J. Mahendran was the wave of versatility and realism that hit the Tamil cinema industry during the mid of the 1960s. But during the early part of his cinema career, it was mostly script writing that he focused on. It was only in the year 1978 that he branched out to the field of direction and directed the movie Mullum Malarum with the superstar Rajinikanth. This movie is believed to be a breakthrough for the megastar.
The director’s popularity grew steadily, and his movies like Uthiri Pookkal (1979) and Nenjathai Killathey (1980) are still considered as to be amongst the best Tamil films to be ever made. Thus, J. Mahendran has played a significant role in shaping the Tamil cinema industry and creating a distinct identity.
This talented director passed away in Chennai on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the age of 79. He was critically ill and was undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital, Chennai, for over a week. His cremation was presided over by some of the industries bigwigs and prominent stars. All of them lamented on this grave loss of the Tamil movie industry.
