Have you ever heard of an elephant orphanage? Well if you have not, then let this be this first instance. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage for wild Asian elephants in Pinnawala village, Sri Lanka. Recently, Ashwini Radha Krishna also known as Rasathi from Oru Oorula Oru Rajakumari that airs on ZEE5, posted a picture about her visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, on her Instagram page.

This cute picture of a few baby elephants playing with each other did manage to spike an interest amongst Ashwini’s followers. This tourist spot has had some rough patches where some people have criticised the working process of this centre and have tarnished its name. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is basically a conservation project which aims at caring and protecting orphaned elephants found in the nearby areas.

This institution was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. As this is part of the conservation project, the aim of the organisation is to protect elephants. For, as of today, Sri Lankan elephants, is a species that is considered endangered and is at the risk of becoming extinct.

Yes, they do chain some of the elephants here, but there is a reason behind it. For most of these animals here are either adopted or rescued from illegal ownership. So, when these previously solitary animals share space with other elephants, they tend to become agitated and aggressive. And hence they are chained.

Also, some people have raised their concern against the use of bull-hooks by the local mahouts but then they just use it to guide and control them and not to harm them. Further, a check was done, and it was found that instead of sharp and pointy hooks, these had round ends which were harmless.
